Black women’s bodies as fetishes in a white world

UILF 2025

In novels such as ”In Every Mirror She’s Black” and ”Everything Is Not Enough” Lolá Akínmádé Åkerström depicts, through a rich gallery of characters, different women’s destinies and what it means to be a black woman surrounded by a white majority in Europe. Lolá Akínmádé Åkerström has her own experiences of problems surrounding race, class affiliation and reduction to fetishism. Nigerian born, she is now a Swedish citizen who has produced international bestsellers. Nevertheless, Swedish publishers have wanted to change the passages in her works that could make Swedish readers feel ”uncomfortable”. That is why nothing has been translated yet.

She talks about that and what black women’s bodies mean to Lawen Mohtadi, journalist, author, director and publisher.
